From stress and anxiety to occasional low energy and difficulty focusing, these feelings are all too common- especially for many women. Myself included. Social anxiety, generalized anxiety, depression and ADHD/focus issues have been the bane of my existence for far too long. Fortunately, I’ve discovered (mostly through trial and error and a good amount of internet research) nature actually provides us with remedies that can offer much relief. Here, I’ll share some medicinal teas that can gently bolster mental wellbeing and promote a sense of calm, resilience, and clarity.

1. Green Tea

Green tea is a treasure trove of benefits. Packed with antioxidants, it also contains L-theanine, an amino acid known for its calming effects. This combination not only helps reduce anxiety but can also enhance focus and cognitive performance, making it a perfect choice for starting your day or during challenging tasks. The gentle boost of caffeine in green tea offers the energizing lift that many women crave without the jitters. The L-theanine in green tea can also help boost mood and a sense of emotional wellbeing. But for those days I don’t feel like a drinking tea, I have started taking a Green Tea extract supplement which has proven to be highly beneficial as well.

2. Kava Tea

Kava is often considered “nature’s Xanax”. It’s active compounds, called Kavalactones, interact with GABA receptors to boost dopamine and serotonin in the brain. This mimics the calming effects of anti-anxiety medications but with a lower risk of addiction. It is highly regarded for managing stress and situational worry. I personally love using it when I have a job interview or another situation that causes my often severe social anxiety to flare up (and I need to get calm FAST). The only issue, is in high doses it can be harsh on the liver. So use it sparingly.

3. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is more than just a soothing bedtime beverage. Renowned for its calming properties, chamomile can help mitigate anxiety and promote better sleep. Its natural sedative effects may reduce the symptoms of depression and ensure a more restful night’s sleep. Enjoying a warm cup of chamomile tea in the evening can be a lovely ritual, allowing you to unwind and reflect on your day.

4. Lavender Tea

Often considered a calming herb in aromatherapy, lavender is equally effective as a tea. Lavender tea can help alleviate anxiety and stress by reducing cortisol levels in the body. The distinct floral aroma and taste make it a delightful choice for those seeking tranquility. Just one cup can create a peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent companion during meditation or quiet moments of reflection.

5. Peppermint Tea

When focus and clarity are what you seek, peppermint tea can be your best ally. The invigorating scent of peppermint stimulates the mind, enhancing cognitive function and boosting concentration. A cup of peppermint tea can awaken your senses and energize you for the tasks ahead, making it perfect during those mid-afternoon slumps or before important meetings.

6. Lemon Balm Tea

For those battling anxiety and stress, lemon balm tea offers a gentle way to soothe frazzled nerves. With a hint of citrusy flavor, this herb has been used for centuries to promote calmness and alleviate symptoms of depression. It it known to boost GABA receptors in the brain and lower cortisol levels. Drinking lemon balm tea can lead to a happier mood and a greater sense of emotional wellbeing. It’s wonderful enjoyed hot or iced on a sunny day.

7. Holy Basil Tea

Holy Basil tea, also known as Tulsi, is praised for its adaptogenic properties, meaning it helps the body manage and adapt to stress. This herbal tea can balance hormones, reduce anxiety, and enhance mental clarity, making it a holistic ally in promoting overall mental wellness. However, because it acts as a mild blood thinner and can affect hormone levels, daily consumption may not be safe for everyone. So it’s recommended to not have more than 1-2 cups a day, or at least not every day

Incorporating These Teas into Your Routine

Making these herbal teas a part of your daily routine can provide a sublime, sensory experience while boosting mental and emotional wellbeing. Whether it’s a moment of calm amidst a busy or anxiety inducing day, a soothing ritual before bed or an energy/focus increase during that afternoon workday slump,  these teas can be a welcome addition to your self-care practices. Remember to listen to your body, and select the tea that resonates most with your needs. With time, these herbal allies can pave the way for a more balanced and joyful life. They certainly have for me.

Introduction: The Healing Power of Aromatherapy

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, sadness, or the constant struggle to focus? If so, you're not alone. Millions of people worldwide are grappling with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and ADHD. While conventional treatments are effective for some, many individuals are seeking natural alternatives to alleviate their symptoms and improve their well-being. That's where the power of aromatherapy comes in. In this article, we'll explore the role of essential oils, including vetiver, ylang-ylang, bergamot, lemon, rosemary, frankincense, rose, jasmine, and lavender, in helping to ease the burdens of anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

Aromatherapy for Anxiety: Finding Calm in the Storm

Anxiety can be an unwelcome visitor, creating a sense of restlessness, panic, and fear. Vetiver essential oil is a popular choice in aromatherapy for its calming effects on anxiety. Its earthy aroma promotes relaxation by grounding the mind and body. Combining vetiver with ylang-ylang, known for its soothing properties, can create a powerful synergy that eases anxiety and provides a sense of tranquility.

How to Use Vetiver and Ylang-Ylang for Anxiety Relief:

Dilute 2-3 drops of vetiver and ylang-ylang essential oils in a carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil. Massage the mixture onto your pulse points, such as your wrists and temple. Inhale deeply and allow the aromas to envelop your senses, promoting a sense of calm and relaxation.

Overcoming Depression with Aromatherapy: Brightening the Shadows

Depression can cast a dark cloud over one's life, making it difficult to find joy or motivation. Bergamot essential oil, with its uplifting and refreshing scent, can be an effective ally in alleviating the symptoms of depression. It acts as a natural mood enhancer, helping to restore a sense of balance and emotional well-being. Combining bergamot with lemon essential oil, known for its energizing properties, can amplify its antidepressant effects.

How to Use Bergamot and Lemon for Depression Relief:

Create a blend by mixing 2-3 drops of bergamot and lemon essential oils. Use a diffuser to fill your living space with their invigorating aroma. Inhale deeply and allow the fragrances to uplift your mood and bring a renewed sense of optimism.

Aromatherapy for ADHD: Enhancing Focus and Concentration

ADHD can make it challenging to stay focused and concentrate on tasks. Rosemary essential oil, with its stimulating properties, can aid in sharpening cognitive function and increasing mental clarity. Its invigorating scent stimulates the senses, helping individuals with ADHD to maintain focus and improve productivity. Combining rosemary with frankincense oil, known for its calming effects, can enhance its ability to anchor the mind and enhance concentration.

How to Use Rosemary and Frankincense for ADHD Relief:

Dilute 2-3 drops of rosemary and frankincense essential oils in a carrier oil, such as almond or grapeseed oil. Apply the mixture to the temples or the back of the neck. Inhale deeply and let the harmonious scents create an atmosphere conducive to concentration and mental clarity.

Unlocking the Full Potential: Other Essential Oils for Mental Well-being

While vetiver, ylang-ylang, bergamot, lemon, rosemary, frankincense, rose, jasmine, and lavender are excellent choices for managing anxiety, depression, and ADHD, it's essential to explore and find the oils that personally resonate with you. Each individual is unique, and different essential oils may have varying effects on their overall well-being.
